Oregon Pink Shrimp Price Negotiations Canceled This Week

State-supervised price negotiations between shrimp fishermen and processors have been canceled this week and likely postponed due to a lack of fishermen available. It would have been the first time in seven years that shrimpers and processors would have met to negotiate and settle on an ex-vessel price.

The coldwater pink shrimp price negotiations operate similarly to Dungeness crab price negotiations in Oregon, where the state Department of Agriculture oversees the talks. Those discussions were scheduled for today, but Oregon Trawl Commission Director Brad Pettinger said fishermen's associations didn't have enough members to participate.

Yesterday a proposed rule to integrate electronic monitoring (EM) into the North Pacific Observer Program was published in the Federal Register, triggering a 60-day public comment period.

Thai Union to Work With Global Brands and Retailers to Address Human Trafficking in Supply Chain

Thai Union Group and Issara Institute are now Regional Partners in an effort to improve working conditions in Thai Union's supply chain. 

This is an expansion of Thai Union's agreement with Issara Institute. Thai Union said it will work with global brands and retailers such as Marks and Spencer, Mars, Nestle, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose, and Walmart in a collaborative approach to address human trafficking in global supply chains.     

“Thai Union considers our work with Issara Institute an imperative to effectively combating the difficult issues migrants often face,” said Darian McBain Ph.D., Thai Union’s global director for sustainable development.

GAA, MultiExport Foods and Mitsui Sign Initiative to Reduce SRS Salmon Disease in Chile

The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), along with Multiexport Foods SA ("Multiexport"), Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui Tokyo") and the Monterey Aquarium Seafood Watch program Bay, is spearheading an initiative in Chile aimed at contributing to a reduction in the incidence of Salmonid Rickettsial Septicemia (SRS) in salmon and trout that are grown in the South American country.

The Piscirickettsia salmonis , or SRS, intercellular bacterium endemic allegedly cost the salmon farming industry more than US $ 300 million a year. It is that SRS can spread rapidly, causing high mortalities if not treated promptly.

Boston Show Upbeat Again this Year as Footprint Expands

The Boston Seafood Show, now called Seafood Expo North America, has an upbeat feel this year.  The Show owner Diversified says it is the biggest show ever in terms of booth space.  In the past the organizers had co-located the show with a regional New England Foodservice Show.  This year that is not happening and the entire hall is seafood only.

Despite high prices on a number of items, the overall feeling here is one of optimism.  Few people have any significant inventories on high priced product, and it is only a couple of items.. such as small coldwater shrimp and some smaller sizes of lobster tails that seem in ample supply.

Sitka Herring Roe Fleet Catches 25 Percent of GHL in Three Hours

The Sitka Sound herring sac roe fishery opened March 19 for a three-hour-and-twenty-minute first opener, after being on a two-hour notice since March 17. Preliminary hails from processors put the total harvest at 3,500 mt of a total GHL of 14,649 mt.

Preferred Freezers Will Open Facilities in Texas, Chicago this Year; to Build Ninth NJ Warehouse

During the Seafood Expo North America in Boston, Preferred Freezer Services (PFS) continued to expand its presence in the US market as the company announced plans to open or build new cold storage warehouses in the New Jersey, Chicago and Texas markets.

Based in Elizabeth, NJ Preferred will open another warehouse in the New York / New Jersey market with a facility in Kearny, NJ.

NGO’s Stumble at Start of Boston Seafood Show with Call for Mexican Shrimp Boycott

A group of 45 conservation organizations led by the Natural Resources Defense Council, will target seafood distributors and retailers at the Boston Seafood Show to urge them to boycott Mexican shrimp.  Trader Joe's will also be a focal point for this campaign.

The hastily arranged campaign, to save the Vaquita Porpoise, ignores all the efforts that are being made in favor of the one tool in the NGO toolkit: boycotts.

The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) combined two squid supply chain roundtables into one global unit and received continued support from the Indonesian government during the Seafood Expo North America, which was held this week in Boston.

Under the merger, two squid Supply Chain Roundtables (SRs) in Southeast Asia and South America will combine. In total, 20 squid fisheries will now cooperate. Major Atlantic clam distributer SeaWatch announced a foodservice line of frozen soups and continued to expand its footprint in the retail sector through a partnership with Bar Harbor Foods during the Seafood Expo North America in Boston this week.

OCI Announces Project to Move Canadian Redfish towards MSC Requirements

Ocean Choice international announced the launch of a Fisheries Improvement Project, through the Groundfish Enterprise Allocation Council, that will aim to bring two more Canadian trawl fisheries up to MSC standards.

For redfish / ocean perch, the FIP will cover the offshore fisheries in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Laurentian Channel, between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.  The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership will support the project to move towards certification of these fisheries.  The offshore TAC for these fisheries is around 8000 tons, of which OCI holds 40% of the quota.

OCI also announced their Greysole / Witch Flounder fisheries in NAFO...
