PWS Sablefish Guideline Harvest Limit is 117,000 lbs, Season Opens April 15

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced yesterday that the 2017 Prince William Sound Area sablefish fishery will open on Saturday, April 15.
The season will open with a guideline harvest level (GHL) of 117,000 lb.
The 2016 harvest of 40,457 lb was less than half of the 110,500 lb GHL, although an increase compared to the 2015 harvest of 16,910 lb, the lowest harvest in the history of the fishery. In 2015, the GHL was 122,000 lbs.
The PWS fishery takes place in state waters, similar to the sablefish fishery in Southeast Alaska. But it relies on surveys conducted by the National Marine Fisheries Service, with adjustments applied that affect PWS. In Southeast Alaska, the state conducts a survey...
